Color has long been associated with gender throughout history, but even more so during modern times. Pink often being seen as the most feminine hue of them all, having been inextricably linked to to femininity for the last several generations. Thankfully, during recent times, as society has evolved, so has the view of the color pink.
History of the Pink Hue and the Breaking of Stereotypes
Pink became associated with femininity and women during the mid 20th-century. Before this, blue was the color more so associated with being "girly", with pink being seen as simply a softer version of red.
Like most things, the deeply rooted associations of pink and blue are reflections of nothing but societal constructs. Traditions that are neither biologically or universally true in any way, other than the fact that society has decided it is so. Thankfully, as society has continued to evolve and grow, many can now agree that a color should not define an individuals identity or interest.
In recent years there has been a growing movement to challenge all of the things previously seen as being "gender norms", including the stereotypical view of the color pink! We are seeing more parents opting for gender-neutral options for their children and brands expanding their color palettes to include all colors when marketing to children regardless of gender. This shift reflects the growing understanding that gender has nothing to do with color, but is a deeply personal matter that is much deeper than a simple hue of pink or blue.
Where Do We Go From Here?
The shift towards gender-neutrality in pink fosters inclusivity within society. By changing what we consume, what we believe, and how we react we can make a change to where pink no longer defines the identity of an individual. By opening the doors for a gender-neutral pink we create a space where creativity, interests, and preferences can be celebrated openly and without constraints.
Pink is power and Pink Lego advocates for the empowerment of all individuals and genders through the color Pink. #EmpowerPinkBricks
